Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what KNX installers and system integrators ask us most.
Remote access
Can I program a building remotely?
Yes. With the Cloud Extras add-on you open ETS and ilevia Manager at your desk and work on any building you installed, as if you were on site — KNX Secure devices included.
The connection is a peer-to-peer VPN. The ilevia Cloud, a Headscale coordination server hosted in Europe, checks that your laptop and the building's ilevia supervisor belong to your trusted group and tells each how to reach the other. From then on the two talk directly, over a WireGuard tunnel encrypted end to end: your programming traffic does not pass through a central server, and nothing has to be opened or forwarded on the customer's router.

You and the building check in
Your laptop and the ilevia supervisor in the building each present their invitation to the ilevia Cloud, a Headscale server hosted in Europe. The ilevia Cloud confirms that both belong to your trusted group.

Choosing the system
Which KNX server should I choose: X1 Plus or V100?
X1 Plus is a 4-module DIN rail server for complex integrations, multiple subsystems and data-intensive projects. V100 is a 10.1" on-wall unit that combines server and touch interface, aimed at residential projects that want one high-end control point. Both run the same software. Not sure? Send us the scope and we will size it with you via contact us. See the KNX servers.
Do I still need ETS if I use ilevia?
Yes. ETS stays the tool that programs the devices on the KNX bus. ilevia Manager reads the project and builds the visualization above it, so the two are complementary rather than alternatives. With the Cloud Extras module you can also run ETS programming remotely through a secure VPN gateway. See visualization and licences.
What is ilevia Manager?
ilevia Manager is the configuration software for the whole visualization project: you integrate devices, design automations and build the user interface from a single application. It runs on Windows and can be downloaded from the downloads page. The downloads are listed as free, with no licence key required to get started.
Can ilevia be used in hotels and hospitality projects?
Yes. One server runs the whole project, with rooms as zones inside it. A language widget lets each guest switch the interface language, the Access Control module covers room access, and Airzone, CoolAutomation and Intesis bridge room climate. Logged data exports to Excel for billing. See hotels.
Integrations
Can I integrate Modbus and BACnet without extra gateways?
Yes. The KNX, Modbus, BACnet and IP gateways are built into the server, so third-party systems connect without additional interface hardware in the cabinet. The server can act as Modbus master or slave, so it can poll field devices or expose itself to a third-party BMS. See protocols.
Does it work with Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit and Matter?
Alexa, Google Assistant and HomeKit all work against the same installation, so you do not have to pick one ecosystem. They control lighting, climate, scenes and shutters. Matter is supported as a protocol, alongside Zigbee and Z-Wave. See voice assistants and integrations.
Which door intercoms are supported?
SIP intercoms from Akuvox, DoorBird, Fermax and Videx are listed. Calls ring inside the supervision, on the touch panels and apps configured for it, and the door or gate can be opened from the same screen. Answering away from the building needs the Cloud Extras module. See door intercom.
Can I connect ChatGPT or another AI to the building?
Yes. The server integrates ChatGPT through the OpenAI API, and the ILEVIA Plugin for ChatGPT lets you control lights, climate, shutters and more, or ask about energy, in your own language. The server also speaks the Model Context Protocol, so any MCP-compatible AI can read states and send commands, including a local model on site.
Installation & licences
Do I need a licence per user or per group address?
No. Every server ships pre-licensed and pre-configured, and the licence imposes no limit on KNX group addresses, users, app installations, scenarios, schedules or push notifications. You power the unit up and start programming. Optional modules extend the system without changing the hardware. See licences.
What do the Cloud Extras and Access Control modules add?
Cloud Extras adds remote KNX programming through a Cloud VPN without port forwarding, remote video intercom, remote camera streaming, remote video verification and 24-month energy data storage. Access Control adds 10, 25 or 50 gates with time-based rules, event logging and unified user profiles. See licences.
Where do I download the software, firmware and datasheets?
The downloads page has ilevia Manager for Windows, the ilevia Control apps, a virtual machine firmware image (.OVA) for demos, training and lab setups, and datasheets for the X1 Plus and the V100, V80 and V40 panels, plus the 2026 catalogue. Anything else is in the knowledge base at support.ilevia.com.
What technical support and training does ilevia offer?
Technical support is always included: a phone hotline, a WhatsApp channel and e-mail support, with a knowledge base at support.ilevia.com. Training courses range from basic configuration to advanced integration, remote or on site. Use the support page, or contact us to request a course.
Using it every day
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes. The server runs on site and the app connects to it directly over the local network, so an internet outage costs you remote access and nothing else. The cloud is used only when you are away from the building; remote video for intercoms and cameras requires the Cloud Extras module. See visualization.
Which app do end users use, and is there a demo?
How does ilevia handle energy monitoring?
Production, storage and consumption appear in one dashboard with live energy flow, costs in local currency and historical analytics. Inverters, batteries, meters and wallboxes connect over Modbus. Data exports to Excel for reporting, tenant billing or audits, and load control can shed non-critical loads. See visualization.
Can I build automations and schedules?
Yes. Logic Flow is a visual engine with triggers, conditions and calculations. Beyond that there are scenes, timers, events, calendars with an astronomical clock, and an unlimited number of weekly schedules, which the installer or the customer can create. Alerts can go out as push, Telegram, e-mail or SMS. See visualization.
